As a result, electric vehicles may be a cheaper option for directors and employees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-a7afc6e0-8587-433a-9f39-3bb8f4994472\"><strong><em><u>Overview<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-98c5f383-23c9-4690-82f1-18d1bbdad1c5\">Company car tax was reformed in April 2002 to an emissions-based system. This was to encourage businesses to choose more fuel-efficient cars in return for greater tax relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-1889071c-bf07-48bd-962f-12a4015ff8b2\">As a general rule, the greater the vehicle\u2019s CO2 emissions, the greater the taxation. This means that electric vehicles and hybrid cars will attract less tax than petrol or diesel cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-16342b26-611d-4f84-9695-524ee2bec118\"><strong><em><u>The New Rates<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-5f59afe7-dc3f-4b57-8654-2a983d946df7\">For the current financial year 2019-2020, the BiK rate for zero-emission vehicles is 16%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-1deff74a-df88-47a9-b095-d6767883c0f0\">However, the government has announced that it will cut BiK rates for zero-emissions vehicles down to 2%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/autumn-budget-2017-overview-of-tax-legislation-and-rates-ootlar\/annex-a-rates-and-allowances\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-6a371839-e0ee-4669-a4e7-760cf4ed7be6\">This could save employees and business owners thousands of pounds in tax each year; making environmentally-friendly cars an appealing option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-322ae553-5de0-4848-82ef-a4720e19a94e\">The table below shows the new Benefit in Kind bands and rates for tax year 2020 to 2021.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"block-8012e912-6e68-469f-8401-af4ee5f1a7d1\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/accountants247glasgowsouth.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/image.png\" alt=\"This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is image.png\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-f9dfc8c3-367b-479b-b9f2-d476607c2970\"><strong><em><u>So how exactly does company car tax work?<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-1ac9ceac-457e-4c76-b037-a7ba16e13d2a\">Company car tax applies to cars bought by employers for their employees\u2019 private use. The tax does not apply to a vehicle owned by a company that is used solely for business use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-8b92e8ac-4417-4e31-bd9c-7794c9271291\">Company car tax is different and more complicated than Vehicle Excise Duty (Vehicle Tax).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-a6f75705-2e11-4f50-abc2-3789efd552c6\">Essentially, company car tax is made up of two parts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"block-35fa0b30-1c4a-475a-9607-ce1a4f47367b\"><li>What tax the&nbsp;<strong>company<\/strong>&nbsp;has to pay<\/li><li>What tax the&nbsp;<strong>employee<\/strong>&nbsp;using the car has to pay<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-cd3c4942-f25f-4695-9990-4827747f1469\">How much the company pays is determined by the car\u2019s P11D value and its CO2 emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-d98fc461-b0cd-4668-abda-c36e0e65aa14\">The P11D value is the value of the car including VAT, accessories\/add-ons and the delivery fee. The company must fill out a P11D form each year and pay a certain fee to the Treasury in National Insurance Contributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-1b41071d-1cda-450d-a77e-3085f2915e8b\">The&nbsp;<strong>employee<\/strong>&nbsp;on the other hand, will pay BiK (Benefit in Kind) tax on the car. The BiK tax rate is determined by three factors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"block-682ac831-2019-4d41-ad39-0a4979d40dda\"><li>The BiK tax band the vehicle sits in<\/li><li>P11D value<\/li><li>Your income tax bracket<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-154b106e-802d-450d-b84d-35d049a2b8d3\"><strong><em><u>Example:<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-824e514e-186c-4b0a-a335-60c9343dcef0\">Let\u2019s say that you buy a car that has a P11D value of 30,000 and the BiK band has been set at 16%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-8b7e0129-cf06-4d67-9785-b335523441d3\">This means the BiK value is 30,000 x 0.16 = \u00a34,800.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-915c0baa-671a-452d-919a-e8b9d3f2ed1c\">The next step is to work out how much tax you will pay on the BiK value by multiplying it by your income-tax bracket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-c2836bfe-b9d4-4bf1-b699-2fdc468dadee\">If you are a 20% taxpayer, you\u2019ll pay 20% of the BiK value \u2013 which equates to \u00a3960 a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-3b0de267-8566-4e1b-a71a-6a4a100c590d\">If you are a 40% taxpayer, it will cost you \u00a31,920.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-8da66857-aa81-4e43-a9e5-d5916c7ce455\"><em><strong>2020-2021 Electric Car Example:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-2a9e5ec3-7001-440a-a201-06e65fe316bf\">If your electric vehicle fell into the 2% BiK band rate during the tax year 2020-2021, you would theoretically pay \u00a3120 a year in BiK for the same car used the in the above example.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-85b68752-47b1-4b12-8a1d-14d9fe168538\">BiK Value: 30,000 x 0.02 (2%) = \u00a3600<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-3cee560e-ba46-4611-8134-5d6c68d5dac0\">How much you pay: 600 X 0.2 (20% tax payer bracket) = \u00a3120 a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-cffc3676-e84b-42aa-9f20-503531ea9542\">OR: 600 x 0.4 (40% tax payer bracket) = \u00a3240 a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-47d9cb71-5891-435b-8c1f-acb8988fe49d\"><strong><em><u>Final Note<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-1a654055-ab9a-4b53-9a99-d98c02db0781\">Please note that this is not an exhaustive explanation of company car tax, but a general overview.
